Hello world!

We are Shop For A Better World, and we have a big task ahead of us.

When the protests across America began in July, we wondered what we could do. Beyond the immediate outrage and outpouring of support, we wondered how we could contribute, how we could help change the tides in a lasting and sustainable way. What changes could we make in our day to day lives that would create a more equitable world for all? How could we create a better world for those at a disadvantage?

Well, we could shop.

Everyone shops. Everyone needs to buy their necessities, their groceries, their clothes, their tools, and, if they can, a little extra. In fact, the average consumer spends $22k on consumer goods and services per year. We decided the best way to help was to harness the power of consumer habits and redirect them to benefit Black and minority-owned businesses. We’re making it easier to discover these businesses by working those changes into habits you already have. You already shop, so why not use our tools to discover new stores you didn’t know existed, and do a little good while you’re at it? Basically, we’re making it easier to Buy Black. And our vision is big.

We envision a society in which economic inequalities experienced by minority communities are eliminated. Currently, white households have 10x more wealth than Black households, and the white-black wealth gap is as wide as in the 1960s, so there’s a way to go, but we’re confident. We’re confident that our mission to achieve economic equity through shopping habits will promote financial well-being and the greater good for all. We’re confident that we can advance economic and community development, while striving to eliminate barriers and biases between buyers and businesses. We’re confident that all of us can Shop for a Better World.

Our task is big, but we’re on our way. We hope you join us.
